The Detailed Programme

Why a new orientation programme?

In 2007 the university evaluated the Induction programme as part of its continuous quality assurance. Following this evaluation it was decided that certain changes were necessary to ensure that students get the most effective and efficient orientation programme to university life.

What is the new approach?

We see orientation as the university's best opportunity to introduce a strong learning environment, that is built on the foundations for academic success, welcomes students and families to the campus community, promotes students' interactions with staff, and convey the values and traditions of the new institution.

What are the goals of the programme?
  • First and foremost orientation should help students to succeed academically, since this is the core business of the university.
  • The orientation process should help students to adjust to and get involved in the university environment.
  • The programme should be designed to assist parents and other family members in understanding the complexity, demands and services in the university environment.
  • It is an opportunity to learn more about incoming students through formal and informal means.

What can you expect from First-year Success Week?

First-year Success Week takes place in the final week of orientation. The specific aim of the programme is to help new students to make the transition from high school to higher education. This is not always an easy transition if you try to go it alone. During Success Week you will have the opportunity to address many of the questions you may have been wondering about but were not quite sure who to ask!

We will be hosting 2 big flagship events during the 3 week orientation programme with cutting edge speakers and creative ideas to kick start the year.

Aside from the big events we are also running daily workshops equipping you ahead of time for the challenges you might face in your first year. The following topics will be covered:
