Debating team puts UFS on world stage
The University of the Free State’s (UFS) debating team consisting of Moses Masitha and Mhlanganisi Madlongolwana (pictured) continues to make waves internationally. In 2009 the team represented the UFS in the 2nd Annual Pan-African Debating Championships in Botswana where it came second. Masitha and Madlongolwana were selected among the top 10 best speakers at the tournament which culminated with the former being voted chairperson of the African Debating Union. They also participated in the 30th Annual World Universities Debating Championships that were hosted by the Vehbi Koc Foundation at the Koc University in Antalya, Turkey. The UFS ranked 189 out of 450 teams that competed in the tournament and Masitha and Madlongolwana once again featured among the best debaters. Both are members of the UFS’s Student Representative Council. Masitha is the president while Madlongolwana is responsible for student development.
